News Pic--Two DepartmentsLUNENBURG COUNTY – Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors Member Wayne Hoover brought up a situation at the September board meeting that he said was not aware of until recently. Hoover said that the counties surrounding Lunenburg and most of the counties in Virginia have a different protocol when dispatching fire departments to calls and he suggested that Lunenburg follow this trend.

Hoover said that two departments are dispatched for all of the fire calls in these other counties, while Lunenburg had only dispatched the closest department throughout the years.

He stated, “This is a situation where we want the best for our county residents.” He continued on to note that outside of family members, a home is one of the most important things to people and the loss of a home and the contents can be devastating.

He said that it was time that Lunenburg responded with multiple departments to structure fires. Hoover said that the “young people” in the departments want to work together in Lunenburg and in the past “personality has come into play more than practicality.”

He noted that he had spoken to Victoria Fire and Rescue Chief Rodney Newton and Meherrin Fire and Rescue Chief Ernie Pyle about this possible change and both of them agreed with it.

Following the discussion about this protocol, the board members unanimously approved a change that will have dispatchers sending multiple departments to structure fires.
