SOUTHSIDE – The James River District basketball seasons are well into the second half of the year and the picture for the postseason is starting to take shape. On the boys’ side the season is coming down to a three-team race in the district with Goochland and Buckingham at the top and Amelia close behind. The Randolph-Henry Statesmen have battled back to a winning record in the district, while Central and Prince Edward continue to look for more wins.

The girls’ division is tight after the top spot with five teams chasing Goochland at the top. Prince Edward has gotten back into the race while Randolph-Henry and Central have not been able to get enough wins this season to remain in the hunt.

Central

The Chargers continue to battle through tough seasons on the hardwood as size and depth have been big hurdles for both the boys and girls. The boys dropped a 61-40 game against Bluestone and a 71-25 contest against the Buckingham Knights.

The girls got a win over Appomattox Regional Governor’s School to pick up their second victory, but they still are looking for the first JRD win of the season after falling to Bluestone and Buckingham.

Prince Edward

The Eagles boys had a tough loss last week in a 66-64 game against Amelia and are sitting at three wins overall this year. They have shown improvement in recent games and could knock off a few teams over the last part of the year.

The Lady Eagles have gotten back into the district race with a big win over Amelia in a 48-43 victory. They are now bunched up in the middle of the district with four other teams that have two or three losses.

Randolph-Henry

The Statesmen boys have been on a roll lately with wins over Prince Edward in a 59-48 score and over Nottoway by a 51-43 final. The Statesmen now are sitting in fourth place with a chance to get into the third position by the end of the season.

The Lady Statesmen are still looking for another JRD win after taking a touch loss to Prince Edward in a game that the Lady Eagles pulled out late by a 35-32 score.
