GOOCHLAND – Rita Ashton of Lunenburg County was recently honored at the biennial multi-chapter luncheon of the Ellinor G. Preston Coordinating Council, Virginia Organization of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.  At the luncheon, individual chapters of this honorary organization of key women educators each recognized a member who had made significant contributions both to the chapter’s success and to education.

The Delta Alpha Chapter, that serves primarily the counties of Brunswick and Lunenburg, selected Mrs. Ashton as its honoree for recognition at this event that was held on November 2 at the Hermitage Country Club in Goochland County.  Cathy Daugherty, International President of the parent organization and a member of a sister chapter in the Ellinor G. Preston Council, was present to bring greetings from the international organization.

Mrs. Ashton is a recently retired elementary art teacher with 27 years of experience in Lunenburg County.  Upon retirement, she was followed in the position by one of her former students whom she had inspired. Mrs. Ashton was previously recognized by the Virginia State organization of Delta Kappa Gamma as recipient of a grant for supplies to teach basket weaving to correlate with the Grade 4 VA Studies SOL.  Mrs. Ashton designs and paints gourds, which she has often donated to fund-raising projects of her Delta Alpha Chapter.  Mrs. Ashton’s enthusiasm and wholehearted participation in chapter activities have been exemplary.
