Our Rock

There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.  1 Samuel 2:2

“… there is no rock like our God. “Wow. That’s awesome, isn’t it?  Here, Hannah used the metaphor of a rock to symbolize God’s steadfastness, His unchanging nature.  Hannah wasn’t the first, or the last, to compare God to a rock.  Moses said, “He is the Rock…” in logo-bonnie ricksDeuteronomy 32:4 and again in verse 15, “…the Rock his Savior” and in verses 18, 30 and 31 of that same chapter.  David said in Psalm 18:2, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”  And in Psalm 62:2, “He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”  Time after time after time, a rock is used as the symbol of unchanging steadfastness.  It’s something solid.  It doesn’t move.  It’s something we can depend on.  It’s something we know will be there, always.  Our God is our Rock.

Is there anything else about which you can make that statement?  Will your spouse always be there?  Not if you end up divorced or your spouse dies.  Will your children always be there?  Not when they leave home to start their own lives.  Will your home always be there?  Not if it burns down or gets blown away in a storm or repossessed when you lose your job.  Will your possessions always be there?  Not if they burn or get stolen.  Will your savings, or paycheck, or retirement fund always be there?  Not if the economy crashes.  Will your job always be there?  Not if you get laid off or fired or the company goes bankrupt.  There is not one thing in your entire life that is totally dependable.  Not one thing.  Except Jesus.

Jesus is the one and only being you can depend on.  He has always been there, from the very beginning.  He will always be here, throughout all eternity.  Your friends may come and go, but Jesus will never leave you or forsake you.  Your circumstances may change, sometimes for the better, some times for the worse.  But Jesus will never change.  He will always love you just as much as He did from the beginning, just as much as He does right now, just as much as He will tomorrow.  He doesn’t change.  His love doesn’t change.  He is always standing right there beside you, holding you up, shouldering the heavy part of the yoke, steadfast, unmoving.  He is the one and only thing you can depend on.  He is your Rock.
