LUNENBURG COUNTY – Confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to climb quickly in surrounding counties while Lunenburg has remained as one of the counties with the lowest confirmed cases. On April 24 Lunenburg County officials said that there has been another confirmed COVID-19 case and that the Virginia Department of Health total will now show 4.

If you have been following the cases in Lunenburg you quickly realize that this is the second time the county has said there was a fourth confirmed case. The first time took place on April 13 when it was announced that the fourth case was confirmed. Days after that, the VDH website returned the number back to 3.

County officials posted on social media to help clarify. “Many people have asked why the VA Department of Health website says that we have 3 cases, when we reported to you that we have 4. Our Piedmont Health District contact stated, “The investigation for one of your cases was transferred to another county as part of an outbreak.” While 4 cases and addresses were originally reported to us, the VDH website will maintain that we have 3 cases. We are grateful that the vast majority of our citizens are not ill and we hope those who are ill can heal quickly.”

The first case in Lunenburg was confirmed on April 6 and identified as a male in his 50’s.

Later that same day a second case was confirmed in Lunenburg and a third case was confirmed on April 7. The first time a fourth case was confirmed was on April 13 and now on April 24 this latest case was announced.

No further information on the sex or age of the cases has been given since the very first confirmation. Medical experts say that as testing increases in areas and spreads out more to more rural locations, numbers will likely rise.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said recently that under President Donald Trump’s phases to reopen states, the first thing that needs to happen is 14 straight days of decreasing confirmed cases.
