‘First Fridays’ Fires up Farmville

First Fridays opened up the season with a bang on May 2nd as the Farmville Jaycees kicked off their annual free summer concert series. Although the torrential rain showers the day before caused the event to be moved from Riverside Park to the Farmville Community Marketplace (formerly known as the old Farmer’s Market), everything, including the weather, food and fun, came together beautifully at 5:30 p.m.

The annual event held at Riverside Park the first Friday of every month during May, June, July, August and September features live music, games and entertainment for children and families, hot food prepared by the Fire Department and other local non-profit agencies and draft beer provided by Blue Ridge Beverage.

Phloyd Eugene Turbo, a southern blues revival band, rocked downtown Farmville as local friends and families mingled and socialized throughout the early evening hours. Other bands scheduled to appear throughout the summer include Improbable Cause, Brian Graham Band, and Gypsy Road.

The Farmville Jaycees hold their membership meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at Charley’s Waterfront Café and invite active young citizens, ages 18 to 40 to join their organization.
