Father’s Day

Father’s Day undoubtedly brings up fond memories.  Whether it’s the time Dad taught you how to play catch or that first fishing trip with just the two of you, you really need to honor Dad for all he has done.

logo-community-newsThe date for Father’s Day to be celebrated is the third Sunday in June which this year is this coming Sunday, June 15th.  Father’s Day was created to compliment Mother’s Day, the celebration that honors mothers and motherhood and is celebrated in May.

Buying gifts can be incredibly hard and also expensive.  Sure, one can always buy a tie or a mug, but why not do something extra-special for Dad this year.

This reporter went online for gift ideas and the most outrageous gifts popped up for Dad’s special day.  Watches, grill sets, skin-care sets, DVD’s, magazine subscriptions, gift cards, wine, sneakers, shirts, ties, ballgame tickets, etc. were on a long list of gifts for Dad.

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers, celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society.  It is also a day to honor step-fathers or someone who serves as a mentor or guide in your life.

A boy grows into manhood, marries and many become fathers.  How do they know how to be fathers?  All of a sudden, with a newborn baby, who teaches him how to be a father?  That’s really something to think about, isn’t it?

A father’s role is best described in a Father’s Day Proclamation by President George W. Bush on June 13, 2003:

‘Fatherhood is one of life’s most challenging yet fulfilling endeavors.  Fathers have indispensable roles to play in the lives of their children:  provider, protector, nurturer, teacher and friend.  Every caring father unconditionally loves his sons and daughters and strives for the best for his children in the future.

Fathers teach their children many basic things in life:  how to read a book, throw a ball, tie a necktie, ride a bike, or drive a car.  More importantly, they also help instill time-honored values in their children, such as hard work, respect, honesty and good citizenship.

The time and attention that a father gives to a child is irreplaceable——there is no substitute for the involvement and commitment of a responsible father.  Not only are fathers essential to the healthy development of children, they also influence the strength of families and the stability of communities.’

So, how do you honor your father on Father’s Day?  This reporter suggests spending time with your father, if at all possible.  If you live far away, he would appreciate a long phone call, I’m sure, or a chat on the internet.

Your presence, if at all possible, would be worth so much more than your presents.

Just don’t forget to remember your Dad on Father’s Day if you’re fortunate enough to still have a Dad!
