CUMBERLAND – During the recent Super Bowl Sunday full day of events, the Puppy Bowl was on throughout the afternoon. Two Envigo beagles that were rescued from the Cumberland, Virginia facility that has been in the news for their treatment of animals were featured during the television show.

The beagles were named Briscoe and Allison as they participated in the annual Puppy Bowl.

In a reminder about this story, the Humane Society of the United States put together a historic mission to remove nearly 4,000 beagles from a mass breeding facility which bred dogs to be sold to laboratories for animal experimentation. The last group of beagles was removed from the facility last year with many taken to area shelters or the Humane Society of the United States’ care center in hopes of finding loving homes.

Since July 2022, the Humane Society of the United States has been leading the operation to remove the beagles from Envigo RMS LLC’s facility in Cumberland, Virginia, at the request of the United States Department of Justice. The transfer resulted from a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice in May, which alleged shocking violations of the Animal Welfare Act at the breeding facility.

Virginia Senator Warner advocated for the animals after learning about the welfare violations at a breeding facility in Cumberland. One of the beagles, Allison, renamed June, was adopted by a Charlottesville family following the Puppy Bowl show.
