LUNENBURG – The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors recently approved support for Container First Services (CFS) in extending the use of the current cell location at the landfill in the county.

CFS continues to prepare for and work on getting a new cell site ready to use for the future, but the current site, along with the current rate of tonnage disposed at the landfill, could last six more years according to engineers.

Beverley Hawthorne, who is Landfill Liaison along with her community development responsibilities, recently discussed this issue with the board members. She said that the current tonnage per day to the landfill on average was approximately 220 tons.

This amount is below some of the projections that CFS had looked to bring in when they took over the landfill operations.

County Administrator Tracy Gee said that an extension to the current cell was requested and approved for Lunenburg back in 2012 and that this had extended the use of that location to 2014.

CFS then asked for an extension to December 31, 2016 and now is looking for approval to continue using the existing cell to December 31, 2018. The county supervisors unanimously approved support of CFS in requesting an extension.
