Congressman Hurt to Retire in 2016

Well known United States House of Representatives Republican Robert Hurt recently confirmed that he would retire at the end of next year.

Hurt, who represents Virginia’s 5th District that includes Lunenburg, won the seat during an election in 2010 when he unseated the incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello.

The three-term winner said that while he is proud to have served in this role, he is looking forward to returning to his private life, He currently serves on the Financial Services Committee.

Hurt is the second House Republican to announce his decision not to seek reelection after Congress adjourned for the holidays. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) announced that he would retire in 2016.

Two Democrats have already declared candidacies for the seat: Former Perriello aide Ericke Cage and Albemarle County Supervisor Jane Dittmar.

Hurt has been present throughout the area, holding public office hours locally several times throughout the year and also stopping into local businesses often during tours of the area.
