centrals-50th-2LUNENBURG – The first of several events planned throughout the year to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Central High School was the Chargers Homecoming game this past Friday night.

The night included the recognition of several classes that included the first graduating class of 1967 at Central. The event saw a huge crowd at the game and included pictures of several classes and former CHS football players that returned for the event.

Lunenburg County Public Schools Superintendent Charles Berkley stated, “We could have not asked for any better weather on Friday night for Central’s Homecoming Game and celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the School. I was astonished at the large turnout of fans and classmates of all the classes of Central High School who came out to support the “Chargers” in their victory and also had a chance to see “old classmates and friends” reminiscing on their old high school days at Central. It was also great to see past teachers and administrators of the school.”

Mr. Berkley continued, “A special “thank you” needs to go out to Anne Hamlett, Meri-Paige Spencer, and Wallace Owen for coordinating all the events of Friday night and having T-shirts made for the Homecoming event.”

Meri-Paige Spencer stated, “I thought it was a great turnout and great to have a lot of former football players back as well as the classes of ‘67, ‘76, and ‘91 also had reunions!  And of course winning the game was the icing on the cake!”

Central Athletic Director Wallace Owen said that he was extremely pleased with the crowd and return of so many former students and players. He stated, “My only regret on the night was that I didn’t get a chance to speak to everyone because there were so many Chargers there at the game.”

The estimated crowd at the event was over 1,500.
