VICTORIA – Victoria Town Council members and town employees have taken on additional duties this past year as the town is now in charge of several events that are held throughout the year.

Victoria officials decided to continue the traditional Autumn Day and the Lunenburg Christmas Parade celebrations this year after the Lunenburg Chamber of Commerce made the decision not to continue as the organizer.

Victoria Town Mayor Carol Watson recently asked for guidance heading into 2016 and if town council members wanted to continue the activities that also include the Easter Egg Hunt in the Park and National Day of the Cowboy.

With so many events each year, it is very time consuming as town employees have to gather information, plan the event, coordinate vendors and participants as well as helping to fund them.

Mayor Watson stated, “I just want to check and see what the thoughts and feelings are so that we will know how to proceed this year.”

Councilman Lee Scott said that he had looked at the financial side of the events and the town was not losing a lot of money on the events. He stated, “These events bring people to the town and also give local residents fun activities.” He continued, “We don’t have many things to bring people in and so I think we should continue on with what we have.”

Town Manager Rodney Newton also noted the success of the recent Small Town Christmas event and said that over 230 kids were there to take pictures with Santa and participate in the event.

The group decided that they would continue on with the events and would talk with Kenbridge officials to see if they wanted to continue to rotate the Christmas Parade or if Victoria would host it again in 2016.
