victoria-fire-1 victoria-fire-2LUNENBURG – After a relatively calm start to the fall and winter fire season, last week saw area departments responding to several locations as a result of land and brush fires that got out of hand and spread quickly.

On November 22 around 4:30 p.m. Victoria Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a location along Hightower Road in the Nutbush area just outside of Victoria for a field fire that was spreading toward a structure.

The fire began as leaves were being burned and high winds caused the fire to spread quickly. It reached a large barn structure on the property and spread quickly through the building and into tires that were stored on the property.

Victoria Fire and Rescue members raced to the location and were able to stop the fire from spreading and put the structure fire out after battling the blaze for nearly an hour.

This response highlighted the great work by the men and women of the department as a large response featured members rushing from their jobs, and even out of the woods as hunting season was getting into full swing.

People are reminded to be careful burning things during dry and windy conditions. Be certain to choose a safe day. A fire is more likely to get out of control on a windy and dry day. Burn during the coolest, dampest, calmest time of the day.  Always stay with your fire and never leave your fire, even for a short time as it can quickly go out of control.

Also remember to dispose of ashes safely. Get rid of used charcoal or ashes from your fire in a hole dug deep into soil. Drown hot coals thoroughly, then cover the ashes with soil.
