VA Murder Suspect Taken Into Custody In Washington Co.

murder Aubrey EvansA local man wanted for first degree murder in Appomattox County, Va., was located and taken into custody, Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, by a Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy. Aubrey Bascom “Butch” Evans III was arrested on Interstate 81 near the 19 mile marker at approximately 10:58 a.m. Evans was taken into custody without incident in Washington Co., Va.

The Appomattox Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Virginia State Police and U.S. Marshals Service, began searching for Evans who killed his wife Friday night, Jan. 31, 2014. The incident began at approximately 4:35 p.m. Friday, when the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal shooting at a gas station on Court Street near the town of Appomattox. Laura Lee Evans, 45, was shot while in her vehicle. She was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where she later died.

Evans’ estranged husband, Aubrey Bascom “Butch” Evans III, 69, fled the shooting scene in a black 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. He was wanted on one count of first degree murder, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
