LUNENBURG – All schools in Virginia will be facing difficult decisions this fall in terms of how to return to instruction as well as how to keep students and staff as safe as possible. In a letter to county residents recently, Lunenburg County Public Schools Superintendent Charles Berkley noted that is hopeful that we will be operating under Phase 3 in August.

Berkley Stated, “Lunenburg County’s Educational TASK FORCE as well as our Administrative team with our School Board approval will be developing the procedures and guidelines that will be followed as we begin the new School Year 2020-2021 in late summer or early fall.  We are currently operating in Phase Two and we are hopeful to progress to a different phase for the opening of school.”

This process to determine the best way to return to school will likely not be completely decided until weeks before school starts as numbers of new COVID-19 cases and the rules set by state officials will likely change over the summer.

LCPS officials recently sent out a survey for parents to answer questions about how they would prefer school to open or if they would rather see distance learning continued.

The survey stated, “Lunenburg County Public Schools needs your input for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.   The information that you provide will help us better serve our students. All information that is being collected will only be shared with the administrative staff.  In addition, we will be reaching out to households that are not able to participate by internet.”

The survey also noted that during the course of the year, adjustments to the schedule will be made as schools are allowed to under the guidelines for each phase.

Berkley stated, “We will be announcing more updates as we move through this process. Working together, we will strive to provide the best opportunities for our students during these difficult times.”
