Sharvette Antonia Walker, a 31-year-old woman of 43 Busy Lane, Kenbridge, was convicted recently in Lunenburg Circuit Court of one felony count of Shoplifting as a Third or Greater Offense of Larceny for the theft of a case of bottled water at the Dollar General Store in Kenbridge last May.  She was sentenced to five years in prison with all suspended except two days in jail.

Walker’s prior larceny events that elevated her crime to a felony include Issuing a Bad Check in Lunenburg in 2006, and the same offense in Nottoway in 2006, and a misdemeanor Shoplifting conviction in Mecklenburg County in 2012 which had been initiated as a felony, but was reduced to a misdemeanor with ten days in jail..

According to a summary of evidence provided in Lunenburg Circuit Court, Walker was seen outside the store by a store manager as she left the store after purchasing some items.  He said he saw her grab a case of bottled water, and heard the adult male with her tell her “Hold on,” when he saw the manager.  The manager said he heard Mrs. Walker say, “I got this,” and continued to her car. The manager took down her license plate number and found out from the cashier that she had not paid for the water.

Kenbridge Police Officer Tyler Anderson ran a check on the license number and put out a BOLO(be on the lookout) for the vehicle.  Anderson said that later, Mrs. Walker returned to the store and told him that a friend had told her that the BOLO had been heard on the scanner.  She offered to pay for the water, but was charged later with the crime.

Later Walker said she had noticed on the receipt that she had not been charged for the water, and said she had told the cashier to do so.  The cashier denied that she had said this.  Walker also denied that she told the police officer that a friend had told her about the BOLO.

An additional suspended sentence of four years, 11 months, and 28 days was imposed under which Walker is subject to conditions of good behavior for five years, warrantless searches and seizures, and staying off the property of Dollar General in Victoria, Kenbridge, and surrounding counties.
