virginia-edmondsLUNENBURG – A case that has been open and ongoing for over three years may be coming to a conclusion following a discovery by hunters in Lunenburg County last Saturday morning.

Lunenburg County Sheriff Arthur Townsend announced that his office is investigating a possible development in the case of Virginia Edmonds, who disappeared near her home in Kenbridge on June 28, 2013.

At around 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, remains believed to possibly be Edmonds were discovered by Steven R. Seamster while he was hunting with the Red Bank Hunt Club on its Lunenburg County property.

Following the investigation of the crime scene, the remains have been sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond, Va. for testing and confirmation.

Sheriff Townsend said that the remains were discovered in the St. John’s Church Road area off of Route 138 outside of Kenbridge. He said that this was approximately 800 yards from the Flatrock Creek area of Lunenburg County where Edmonds car was discovered months after her disappearance.

Sheriff Townsend said that the remains were found across a creek area. A massive search led by Sheriff Townsend and his office that included all other area law enforcement, helicopter teams, K-9 units and search teams had combed the area near the discovery of the vehicle previously, but at the time there was heavy vegetation in the area and nothing was discovered.

Deputies found the Oldsmobile Alero Edmonds was driving in the Beaver Creek Community of Lunenburg County in September 2013, just three months after her disappearance.

It was located in a wooded area in the 900 block of Egg Drive. The car was found by a man using a bush hog in an adjacent path.

Family members say that Edmonds left home in her vehicle on June 28, 2013 and had not been seen since that time. She reportedly had some medical issues and it was speculated that she may have become confused while driving.

Sheriff Townsend said that if the test shows this to be Ms. Edmonds, her death is certainly a tragedy, but “hopefully this can help bring some closure to her family who has been missing her since her disappearance.”

Anyone having information concerning this matter is asked to call the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office at 434-696-4452.

Additional information about this ongoing investigation will be released to the public when it becomes available.
