The Randolph-Henry Varsity boy’s basketball team dropped two competitive games this week.  Wednesday, they lost a home matchup with District leading Bluestone 86-76 and Friday lost a back and forth contest at Goochland 69-60.

Against the first place Barons, the Statesmen jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout the 1st Quarter.  R-H led 17-10 at the end of the 1st, but Bluestone rallied to take a 39-28 lead into halftime.  The Statesmen stormed back in the 3rd cutting the lead back to two at 61-59 going into the final frame.  After taking the lead back early in the 4th Quarter, R-H could not stretch it more than 3 points at anytime.  The Barons gained the advantage with 2 minutes to play as they scored several baskets after missing foul shots which extended their lead, winning 86-76.  Tremaine Pugh led the Statesmen with 25 points, 20 in the 2nd half.  Sam Williams added 14 and Billy Brantley 13.  Rounding out the scoring was Dajour Davis 8, Jordan Jones 6, DaQuan Wilson 3, Nasheim Pettus 3, Damian Dixon 2 and Jesse Redd 2.

Friday, R-H traveled to Goochland.  This game was a back and forth contest with many lead changes.  The Statesmen trailed 39-38 at halftime, but took the lead by as many as 8 midway through the 3rd and held a 53-50 advantage to start the 4th.  Unfortunately, a couple of key turnovers and the failure to hit their shots, the Statesmen fell behind by 6 with 3 minutes to play.  Goochland hit their foul shots down the stretch and came away with the victory.

Williams had a hot hand, leading the team with 18 points.  Pugh scored 14 and Pettus had 11.  The rest of the Statesmen offensive attack was Davis with 8, Sherrek Boyd 5, Brantley 4, and Chris West 2.

Coach Graves made the following comments about the games.  “The team played really well in both of these games.  Unfortunately, we didn’t get a win in either.  It is frustrating to have these kind of efforts and lose.  We will continue to work hard and see what happens.  We are showing so much improvement for which I am very proud.”
