CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE – Randolph-Henry opened its softball District season with a visit to Central of Lunenburg on Tuesday, March 27 but lost 10-0. The team faced some outstanding pitching, and it showed in the final score, getting only one hit by Megan Davis and two walks from Cheyanne Newcomb and Anna Pasciuta. However, the Statesmen girls did a good job of holding Lunenburg to just four runs in the first four innings. Reflected in the score at the end of the game, R-H had a few errors and gave up six runs in the bottom of the fifth to close it out 10-0. Overall, the team played well and will have to keep working hard.

R-H played at Nottoway on Wednesday, March 28th and again lost 10-0. Again, a couple good pitchers shut them down. Nottoway put up eight runs in the top of the first and didn’t score again until the bottom of the fifth to seal it. Najada Robertson did a great job pitching after she settled down in the bottom of the second. Three innings that went three up and three down. R-H just could not catch up with their pitchers to get the bat on the ball.

R-h hosted Bluestone on Friday, March 30th and lost 20-17 in eight innings. This game came down to who was going to make the mistakes in the final inning. Bluestone put up four runs in the top of the first, but the Statesmen girls put out six runs. After a day of all batting practice on Thursday paid off because we had three hits and a grand slam home run by Macie Fannon in the bottom of the first to lead 6-4. Megan Davis started off pitching and did a great job through five innings even though she gave up nine runs all but two were earned. Bluestone hit the ball but R-H was still ahead 12-9. A pitching change in the top of the sixth was made because Bluestone was catching up to Megan. Freshman Najada Robertson went to the mound to see if she could slow them down some. They got three runs in the top of the sixth, and R-H got four runs to make the score 16-12 headed to the seventh. Two errors in the top of the seventh let Bluestone score four runs which tied the game at 16-16. The R-H girls were on fire and there was “win!” in their eyes. Unfortunately, they gave up early and had to go to extra innings. Before the eighth inning started, the lights went out and the game had to wait about 20 minutes for the lights to come back on so play could resume.  That seemed to help Bluestone more than it did R-H because in the top of the eighth Bluestone scored four runs to put them up 20-16 with R-H coming to bat. The Statesmen girls never quit, starting off with a hit and when it was looking good, they ended up scoring one run and left two people on base to end the game with the final score 20-17. Casey Arrington had three hits, Sarah Wilmoth had two hits (both doubles) and a walk, and one RBI, Anna Pasciuta had two hits , a walk, one RBI, Anne Grace Cary had two hits, two walks, Macie Fannon had a grand slam four RBI’s, Cheyanne Newcomb had four hits, RBI, Hannah Pasciuta had three hits, RBI, Leighan Payne had one hit, and Megan Davis had one hit.

From the R-H coach, “I am so proud of these girls; they knew we needed to hit if we were going to have a chance to win and they came out on fire. I believe if we keep working hard and listening to the coaches good things are on the way.”
