R-H Girl Hoopsters Off to Strong Start

The Randolph-Henry Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team got off to a great start this season out in Prince Edward County with a 40-37 comeback win. The girls were down by 6 at the end of the 3rd quarter, but outscored Prince Edward 18-10 in the final quarter thanks to the 3-point shooting of Amber Shelton and Secily Baker. Free throw shooting from Alicia Stith iced it for us in the end.

Jaden Nichols and Ciyanna Clark are two of the teams’ most versatile players, contributing everywhere on the court. Jaden almost had a double-double on Friday while leading the team with 9 rebounds and 7 points. Other positives so far this season come from our center, Shannon Allen, who leads our team in rebounding and blocks. Carliyah Stovall and first time player, Summer Scott, are contributing majorly on the defensive end with their quick hands while racking up a lot of steals in the team’s first three games. First time player Hadiyyah Westry is showing a lot of improvement as we progress through the season, but got hit with the injury bug in the team’s second game of the season. We wish her a speedy recovery so we can have her back.

Although the girls had some tough losses against Chatham and Amelia, they’re getting better every day in practice and in the games. The girls have three games this week – at Buckingham and at home against Chatham and Nottaway. Come out to support the Lady Statesmen.
