Pope Francis

Surely, you must have been aware of all the “hoopla” in our United States of America last week. One could not pick up a newspaper or turn on any media without seeing and hearing about the busy, personable Pope Francis and listening to some of his speeches.
Before he arrived in the United States, Pope Francis had visited Cuba and met with Fidel Castro. Throngs of people lined the streets there for just a glimpse of the Pontiff.
The Pope was then flown to Washington, D.C. where he spoke to Congress, a first for any Pope. This reporter was intrigued by the fact that he turned down the invitation by U.S. lawmakers for lunch and opted instead to pray with people who rely on Catholic social services, shook hands with the homeless and blessed their food. “In prayer, there are no rich or poor people,” he told them. “There are sons and daughters.”
Next on the Pope’s agenda was a visit to New York City where he visited Ground Zero and gave comfort to families of the victims of 9/11.
In both cities, Pope Francis traveled on his motorcade in his “Popemobile” and had the driver stop many times so that he could bless babies, schoolchildren and others. Wherever he went, the streets and adjoining parking areas were filled to the brim with those just wanting a glimpse of this special man.
Last Saturday Pope Francis visited the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What a day for the Pope, everyone in attendance and for those watching on television. I am sure that he was exhausted at the end of this special celebration for the Festival of Families. Aretha Franklin, accompanied by a huge choir, sang “Amazing Grace” and Italian classical tenor, Andrea Bocelli, gave an outstanding performance of “The Lord’s Prayer.” A number of families from other countries had flown in to speak to the Pope about their faith in God and how it has sustained them through many difficulties. It was, indeed, a touching program.
This reporter doesn’t know and can’t imagine how long ago all these events were set up but in every instance, everything seemed to run smoothly. Even the policemen in D.C. and New York City commented about the consideration of the crowds for Pope Francis.
This visit to our country was a first for Pope Francis and I was proud of the courtesy he received from my fellow Americans even though they were reminded about etiquette, especially when he was speaking. He spoke many times in English and it was evident that he had really been practicing our language. He spoke softly with clear enunciation.
After all the recent tragic events in our country and the terrible riots, it was a real blessing to see so many Christians gathered together for the Pope’s visit.
Love and peace were present at every turn. I do believe that America needed this boost for Christianity from Pope Francis. His personality and concern for others came through in all of his speeches. He stressed belief in God, the togetherness of families and love of fellow man.
Pope Francis, I thank you for your visit, your wisdom and your prayers!
