• Douglas Ray Barksdale, 66, of Rustburg passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 21, 2015.

He was born on July 20, 1949, to the late John and Iva Barksdale of Phenix.

Mr. Barksdale was one of the founders of the Barksdale Cancer Foundation, a grassroots organization dedicated to helping cancer patients in Charlotte County. He was a member of Thomas Terrace Baptist Church and a well-known businessman and building contractor in the Lynchburg area.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lois Anne Campbell Barksdale; four children, Christopher Ray Barksdale and wife Amy of Warrenton, Angela Michelle Vendetti and husband Carl of Rustburg, Brett Edward Barksdale of Forest, and Amber Renee’ Grooms and husband Chris of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; a brother, James Barksdale of Phenix; and two sisters, Violet Shores of Red Oak and Patricia Harding and husband Jimmy of Clarksville.

Mr. Barksdale was predeceased by two brothers, Riley and Lockie Barksdale, and a sister, Dell Garrett.

Funeral services and a celebration of his life were held Saturday, July 25, at his church, with interment at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
