The September meeting of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors convened at the regular time. However, the special Public Meeting with Dominion Power regarding the new natural gas pipeline convened just prior to it and overlapped the regular monthly meeting.

The Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors Meeting started on a somber note this month. Supervisor Bob Timmons sadly reported to all present the passing of Dora Chaffin. Mrs. Chaffin is survived by her husband, Wilkie Chaffin. Wilkie, for years, covered the business of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors for the Southside Messenger. The announcement showed the immense respect the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors has for Mr. Chaffin and his wife.

A discussion took place between Wade Bartlett, Bob Timmons and Robert Jones over the purchase of a car and truck for the county. A recommendation to table the purchase came because it will affect the County budget. Bob Timmons further suggested that the purchase be removed from the discussion and be placed before the Finance Committee for examination before it is ruled on.

VDOT is planning to perform repairs on Rt. 665, or Darlington Heights Road. Signs are now posted along the route warning of road closures that begin on 9/29. Also, a utility relocation is proposed to take place along Rt. 643.

Jerry Townsend passed a compliment along to VDOT, commending them generally on the work that they do in the county.

In an update, approximately 95% of the county assessment information has been entered into Department software.

The matter concerning the “Citizen Volunteer” was addressed by the Board. It was decided that the Board would advertise the opening for 30 days.

Another topic of discussion was the septic system at The Manor. There is some discussion of opening the system up to help facilitate sales in the area.

The topic of a sound system and monitors for the meeting room came up again. In an update to a previous request, the cost for the proposed upgrade was put before the Board. A system for the room could range between $2500 and $4000. The money for this upgrade, however, is not in the county budget. Bob Timmons asked that this item be placed in the hands of the finance committee, who would be responsible for finding the money to make the much needed upgrade.

The Moton Museum Community Banquet is coming soon. It is scheduled for October 2 this year. Patti Cooper-Jones made a motion for a table sponsorship for the historical museum’s annual banquet.

Finishing up business for the month of September was a motion to renew the contract of the county attorney.
