More expertise at Halifax Surgical Associates

Since it opened in September as Halifax Regional Health System (HRHS)’s newest physician practice, Halifax Surgical Associates (HSA) has been busy helping patients with their general surgery needs. Now, HSA will provide even more expertise and physician availability.

Michael J. Tozzi, DO, will began seeing patients January 2. Dr. Tozzi comes to HRHS from his private practice in South Hill, bringing with him numerous years of general surgery experience. He is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Tozzi received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at City Avenue, Germantown and Parkview hospitals in Philadelphia. He completed his fellowship in vascular surgery at Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in Browns Mill, New Jersey.

“While all of my surgical training was done in the inner cities of the northeast, I have always wanted to practice in a more rural community hospital so I could know my patients and their families,” Dr. Tozzi states. “I am very pleased and excited about transitioning to Halifax Surgical Associates.”

Dr. Tozzi joins Lovetta Pugh, MD and Edward Purvis, II, MD, at HSA. The practice offers procedures such as removal of skin lesions, cyst aspiration, and laceration suture. Operating room procedures include breast surgery, abdominal surgery, cancer surgery, endoscopy procedures and vascular surgery, among many others.

Dr. Tozzi conducts a wide variety of general surgical procedures including laparoscopic gallbladder and appendix surgeries. He also does colonoscopies and endoscopy of the stomach as well as bronchoscopies and several minimally invasive procedures.

“Surgery can be a stressful experience for all involved, so I enjoy caring for my patients as well as their families,” Dr. Tozzi says. “I love the field of surgery and I feel Halifax Regional has a similar philosophy to my own which centers on keeping quality medical care right in our own community. I look forward to offering our residents positive surgical solutions.”
