LUNENBURG – The final Standards of Learning (SOL) numbers have recently been released and Lunenburg County Public Schools were pleased to see that Central High School is fully accredited.

Kenbridge Elementary and Victoria Elementary were both “partially accredited with warning” in English and math while Lunenburg Middle School was “partially accredited and warned in math.”

The SOLs for Virginia Public Schools establish minimum expectations for what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or course in English, mathematics, science, history, and other subjects. SOL tests measure the success of students in meeting the Board of Education’s expectations for learning and achievement.

LCPS Superintendent Charles Berkley stated, “This year’s results indicate we still have opportunities for growth in preparing our students for their future. However, SOL test scores are just one indicator of how well a child is doing in school. The latest SOL test scores tell a story of notable academic progress. We are proud of the advances our students have made with a steady climb of reaching the goals set by the Virginia Department of Education. We feel that Lunenburg is on course to reach those expectations in the near future.”

Lunenburg has shown increased scores over the past several years and the school officials have already begun changes that are designed to continue that trend of overall achievement and in specific target areas such as math and reading/English.

Mr. Berkley noted that the schools have hired additional reading and Curriculum Specialists to re-align courses and add extra ESL teachers throughout the school division. Additionally, the schools applied for and received a math grant through Longwood University to enhance the mathematics program. He also noted that changes, including adding and moving instructional and administrative staff throughout the division, have been made in order to enhance and improve the instructional teams.

All of the LCPS schools met the science and history accreditation benchmark.

Mr. Berkley continued, “There is a balance between teaching test material and providing students access to rigorous and relevant learning experiences that will teach them the 21st century skills necessary for college and career readiness. Our school system will continue to work with the VDOE to provide students, staff members, and schools the resources to succeed.”
