Willie’s Place Offers an Old Fashion Barbershop Experience

 By Roy Brown
Earlier this week when I overheard a conversation about a new barbershop in Charlotte Court House, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Friday morning I went looking for this place. I found it across from the Village Drive In on Highway 40. The name was Willie’s Place. I couldn’t believe when I walked in and was greeted by a young Southern Belle. She was busy cutting and told me it would be about 20 minutes. I told her not to give up my spot, that I was going across the street to get a cup of coffee. I had a great conversation with another gentleman that was also waiting. It was an awesome, country barbershop waiting experience.

willyIt was everything I heard it was. She asked how I wanted my hair cut and I told her just to do her best to make me look good. I received a scissor cut accompanied by great conversation that went from the weather to hunting and fishing. She finished off my time in the chair with warm lather on my neck and a straight razor trim. She then walked me to the sink, to wash my hair. After leaning me back to the sink she pulled out a hot towel and wrapped it around my face. I was in heaven. After washing and rinsing my hair she used the warm towel for a short neck massage. She also offered to dry my hair, but I declined because I was going to work anyway. All of this for $12.

In 57 years and a number of haircuts, this was by far one of the best cuts and experiences I have ever received. I know now that Willy is my new barber.

Willy is Savannah “Willy” Price. She opened on December 2nd of this year. She is a native of Charlotte County, raised on a tobacco farm. She cut her family’s hair while growing up. After being home schooled, she graduated from SVCC in 2011 having completed studies in both cosmetology and barbering. She gained experience at Salon One prior to getting her license. She started her career at a salon in Farmville where the owner noticed her ability to cut men’s hair in a timely manner and her skill with the straight razor. From there it was off to a barbershop in Lynchburg.

Willy wasn’t real happy with the long drive or the clientele in the larger area. Driving home one night she saw her current building for rent, and made a decision to start an old style barbershop where men could enjoy a cup of coffee and visit while waiting for a haircut. She decided that the small town atmosphere with familiar faces was the way she wanted to go. I for one am glad she made that decision. Thanks, Willy!
