LUNENBURG – In a quick and unanimous decision, the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors rescinded a conditional use permit that had been given to Verizon for the purpose of building a communications tower in the Dundas area.

Community Development Director Beverley Hawthorne told the group that no work had been done on the proposed 295-foot Mill Pond Road tower in Dundas and this had come on the heels of Verizon Wireless being given additional time to work on the project in October 2015. Supervisors had asked that Verizon start on the project by the end of 2015 but nothing had been done at that location.

Supervisor Dr. Frank Bacon quickly made a motion to rescind the conditional use permit and that was unanimously approved.

Another tower at the Rocky Mill Road location near Victoria has seen work begin and was in compliance with previous conditional use permit requirements.

The Rocky Mill tower is supposed to be completed by April 30, 2016. Mrs. Hawthorne said that she had been in contact with another company about the possibility of placing a tower in Lunenburg and that she was also working to have the Mill Pond location taken off of the maps used to show tower locations for companies.

The county officials had noted that the area does need additional towers, but that they did not want a company simply holding on to a location without actually going forward with building the towers when there may be other companies that would be willing to place their towers in that or similar locations.
