FARMVILLE – A Farmville woman will see her dream of a community dog park become a reality this Friday.

Three years ago Cristine Voitko of Farmville started a Facebook page to see if there was interest in having a dog park in the town. Little did she know that the simple construction on a Facebook page would lead to the actual construction of a dog park.

After much work and many donations, the Town of Farmville has completed a dog park located on North Virginia Street adjacent to the DMV building.

The new dog park is being dedicated and named in the memory of Dr. Erica D. Geary, a veterinarian who worked at Ridge Animal Hospital in Farmville. Dr. Geary, 26, died in a vehicle accident last year.

Currently, there is a tenth of an acre that is being utilized for the park and has areas for both large and small dogs, as well as watering stations.”

The dedication will be held this Friday, January 8 at 3 p.m. The community is invited to attend and bring their dogs.

According to Town of Farmville officials, there was a budget of  $30,000 for the construction of the dog park. It is estimated that construction costs were under budget, and around $25,000 was spent.
