Christ Our Chief Corner Stone

logo-hevenerBiblical writers frequently refer to our Lord Jesus Christ as the Rock, the Chief Corner Stone.  In literature, when one thing or person is called something else or someone else, the device is known as metaphorical.  One of the reasons for using the metaphor, is to allow a key word, or words, to suggest a cluster of inner meanings which may not be suggested by the actual name of the object or person. An excellent example of this metaphorical use is found in our study today.  David, in Psalm 118:22,23 (through the device known as historic future) projects upon the coming Messiah the title of “Cornerstone.”  22The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. 23This is the LORD’S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.…”

As recorded by the disciples in the New Testament, the titles of Stone and Cornerstone are often chosen by Jesus to identify, Himself:

Matthew 21:42 : Jesus said to them:  “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”  Here, Matthew records Christ referring to Himself as the Stone and Cornerstone.

Again, Mark records Jesus’ asking: “Have you never read this Scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.’?” There are a number of similar New Testament passages which refer to Christ as the Stone and Cornerstone.

Why does Jesus refer to Himself as the Cornerstone? The cornerstone (or foundation stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation; it is critically important because all other stones will be set in alignment with this stone. Consequently, the cornerstone determines the accuracy and correctness of the entire structure. In addition to the architectural value of the cornerstone, the ceremony of laying it is an important cultural component of eastern architecture, as well.

Now, let’s look at the spiritual inner meaning of “stone” and “cornerstone.” Christ taught that one should build his life on rock, stone, not on sand. (Matthew 7.) Christ is that Rock upon which the wise person will build his life.  It is He who is the Source of life and who is master over death, for He arose from the grave on the third day. (Luke 24.)  Therefore, one who believes in and follows Christ is preparing for eternal life; thus, he is building his life on solid rock.

Another dimension of inner meaning of “cornerstone” is that the values of Christ are the values with which each wise individual will align his life.  Human values are fickle and limited in scope, but the values lived and taught by Christ are eternal, leading to happiness and peace now and, finally, to eternal life with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The apostle John confirms the confidence that he has in Jesus and His power over death. John writes: “13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John 5:13.

Is Christ the Cornerstone of your life?  If not, accept His offer of forgiveness and eternal life.  This decision will bring you a peace, a calm, that passes all human understanding.

Until next week, may God richly bless you and yours.
