CHARLOTTE COUNTY – The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. The meeting began with a public hearing regarding the court- ordered new courthouse.  Brick Goldman spoke on behalf of others in the audience in support of the Supervisors.  Other speakers objected to the location behind the Clerk’s office.   Several speakers claimed that Kathleen Kilpatrick, formerly of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, had stated to them that she had not been involved.

After the public comment period Chairman Haywood Hamlet gave a brief history of the courthouse litigation since 2011, which included that Kathleen Kilpatrick had been a member of the original committee and had been involved.

Kathleen Kilpatrick confirmed in a phone conversation that she had been emailed by P.K. Pettus, who had asked, “Are you involved with the Court House project or with Glavé  and Holmes?”   Ms. Kilpatrick stated, “As the question was in the present tense I took it to mean ‘Are you currently involved?’ so I answered ‘I am not involved.’ Of course I was involved in the beginning. Until leaving the Department of Historical Resources it was part of my job.”

A motion was made by Nancy Carwile and seconded by Butch Hamlett to comply with the court order and proceed with the mandated plan. The motion was passed unanimously on a roll-call vote.

In other business the board approved a resolution reaffirming support of Hunting with Dogs in Virginia.

Scot Shippee with VDOT addressed the board regarding the intersection of Hwy. 360 and Hwy. 47 at Crafton’s Gate. A local committee will be formed to assess the situation and to consider possible ways to lower the accident rate at the intersection.

Resolutions were passed recognizing the service of Stuart Fallen, former Clerk, Dave Guill, former Bacon/Saxe Board of Supervisors member, and Ned Locke, former School Board Member, for their years of service to Charlotte County.
