Burrel Atkinson Brown

Burrel Atkinson Brown, of Charlotte County, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 17, 2014 five weeks prior to his 90th birthday.  He was the husband of the late Marjorie Pillow Brown for 53 years.

Mr. Brown was born in Charlotte County, May 22, 1924, a son of the late Samuel Purley Brown and Mary Payne Brown.  He was a longtime member of Roanoke Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder.  He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and his county as sheriff from 1972 to 1987.  Daddy was a southern gentleman who always treated everyone with kindness and respect.

He is survived by two sons, Dennis Brown (Vickie), and Timothy Brown (Valerie) all of Brookneal; two daughters, Faye Elder (Winfred) of Brookneal, and Phyllis Smith of New Orleans, LA; twelve grandchildren, Troy Elder (Wendy) of Brookneal, Todd Elder (Oscarlyn) of Lynchburg, Jeremy Brown (Rachel) of Brookneal, Holly Smith, Lloyd Smith both of New Orleans, LA, Shannon Campamour (Ryan) of Japan, Eric Brown (Melissa) of Brookneal, Brandon Brown (Shannon) of Charleston, SC, Mason Walker (Liesl) of Blacksburg, Dustin Brown (Brittany Jones), Lindsay Cowart (Kerry) all of Brookneal, and Corey Claybrook (Stephanie) of Gladys; twelve great-grandchildren, Cain, Madeline, Sam, Carter, Jackson, Leyton, Chesney, Ellis, Haley, Jenna, Leah and Abigail; a sister, Ethel B. Russell of Mt. Airy, NC.  He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Valley View Assisted Living for their loving care of Burrel during his last year.

A funeral service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014 at Roanoke Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John Kidd with interment following in the church cemetery.

The family received friends from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal and at the residence of Faye and Winfred Elder, Cedar Tavern Rd., Brookneal other times.
