Arc Meeting Set for Tuesday, Feb. 4

Written by on January 30, 2014 at 1:34 pm

The community is invited to the February 4 meeting of the Arc of Southern Virginia, Halifax County Sub Chapter, at 6:30 p.m. in the Leggett Auditorium at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Because the January meeting was cancelled due to weather, the guest speaker scheduled for that meeting will be hosting the February gathering.

Guest Speaker Jackie Hampton, Mentor Network Regional Recruiter, South Hill, Virginia, will discuss Mentor Network services available to persons with a wide range of needs, including autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, complex medical conditions, behavioral challenges and mental health diagnoses. Whatever the need or challenge, mentors engage the persons whom they serve in creating a service plan that improves their quality of life and supports them to live as independently as possible.

The program will be of particular interest to families planning for an intellectually or developmentally disabled loved one’s residential or respite care needs in the local community.

The Mentor Network is actively recruiting mentors and host homes to provide for the residential and support needs of these citizens.

Serving Halifax, Mecklenburg and Charlotte counties, The Arc of Southern Virginia advocates for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, working to foster full inclusion and active participation in the community for the enrichment of the lives of these individuals and their families by providing community education, support, information and referral with a strong emphasis on youth and adult self-advocacy.

The Arc of Southern Virginia welcomes new members or “drop-ins” to their meetings and activities. Membership is free of charge and meetings are casual. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 in the Leggett Auditorium at Halifax Regional Hospital.
