CHARLOTTE COUNTY – The Barksdale Cancer Foundation, a local foundation that raises funds for cancer patients living in Charlotte County, held its eighth annual poker run on Saturday, July 23.

The poker run saw the first bikes and vintage cars and trucks leave out at 10 a.m. from the Wylliesburg Tastee Freez, located on Hwy. 360, and the second group leaving out at 11 a.m. The riders made stops at Bumper’s Store, located on Hwy. 47 near Drakes Branch, Badeaux’s, located on Hwy. 360 near Keysville, Village Arts and Crafts, located in the Town of Charlotte Court House and ending in the Town of Phenix at the pavilion, where the riders were treated to a lunch provided by BCF volunteers and through donations afforded to the foundation.

Kenny Covington of Drakes Branch had luck on his side as he drew the winning hand in this year’s poker run, and also was the winner of the first door prize drawn during closing festivities. Additonal door prizes and raffle prizes were also given away at the end of the run.

Wylliesburg’s Woodmen of the World Chapter 179 provided free breakfast (some chose ice cream because of the extreme temperatures) to participating riders in this year’s poker run. The group also gave American flags for riders to display on their bikes and vehicles.

According to the president of the Barksdale Cancer Foundation Wendy Lankford, “this year’s poker run was a success, with money raised in excess of $4,000.” “We want to thank the many, many sponsors, the riders and the volunteers in helping make our poker run such a huge success,” continued Lankford. “The poker run is a true example of neighbors helping neighbors.”

If you know of someone in the Charlotte County who is battling cancer and in need of assistance, please call Terri Jones at 434-735-8196 for an application.

Donations can be made to the foundation at BCF, P.O. Box 225, Charlotte Court House, VA  23923.
