​Local DAR Chapter Presents Awards

The Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter/VADAR presented awards to the local Daughters of the American Revolution- Flag of the USA and American History Essay Winners at their Scholarship & Awards Meeting, March 8 at the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department.

DAR Flag of the USA winner from Prince Edward Elementary School, Amirious Ortiz wrote the winning essay for his school under the supervision of teacher Ms. Catherine Noraas.  Fuqua’s winner was Ashley Ligon, whose teacher is Ms. Krystal Tucker.

The following local schools participated in this year’s American History Essay Contest:  Cumberland Middle School, Fuqua Upper & Lower School. This contest was open to students in grades 5-8.  Students prepared an essay with this year’s essay topic of ”World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars. The end of World War I was the beginning of a new age. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Imagine you are living in 1918. State where you are living and how the end of the war will impact your daily life. Discuss the pros and cons of the changes this War introduced to society and how you imagine those changes will impact the United States in the years to come.” Qualifying entries from fifth grade students run from 300 to 600 words; sixth, seventh, and eighth grade entries, from 600 to 1000 words.

Teachers whose students wrote American History essays  from Cumberland Middle School were Ms. Jennifer Hendricks and Mr. Lewis Longenecker; Fuqua School : Ms. Valerie Thomas, Cameron Rhew, and Ms. Krystal Tucker.  Ms. Becky Kelly and Ms. Marilyn Osborn co-chaired the DAR Flag of the USA program. Dr. Nancy Vick chaired the American History Essay program.
