CHARLOTTE CO. – The Major League Baseball draft took place this week and a familiar name went on the second day as Charlotte County native Bradford Webb was selected.

Webb went to the Texas Rangers with their seventh-round pick and became the highest VCU draft pick since 2006 when Scott Sizemore went in the fifth round.

Webb had a strong season at VCU after transferring from Hampden-Sydney as a graduate transfer. He had 17 appearances and 14 starts for the Rams while leading the team with 57 strikeouts and a 3.16 ERA.

VCU won the Atlantic 10 championship and an NCAA Tournament selection for the first time since 2015.

Webb got his baseball start in Charlotte County where he played for the Dixie Youth teams and then on a Randolph-Henry team that featured several strong arms. He attended Hampden-Sydney, which sent out the following tweet after Webb was selected: “Once a Tiger always a Tiger! Congratulations to Bradford Webb, could do it on and off the field!”

Webb was recruited to Hampden-Sydney by former Randolph-Henry Statesmen coach, Billy Catron and given an opportunity to play. He pitched in a summer league where a VCU player alerted their coaches about him and eventually ended up at the Richmond school.

His grandfather, Gary Walker, spoke about Bradford and noted that he had been a hard worker that loved baseball. He said that despite Bradford being one of the smallest players during his Dixie career, he had been a part of three World Series teams from Charlotte.

Webb went on to help Randolph-Henry High School with success and continued to grow and increase his velocity on the mound.

Walker was emotional with pride when talking about Bradford and stated, “I would say he is an example of a kid that works hard and loves the game.”

He said that he hopes Bradford can serve as an example for other area kids. He stated, “It is a story of a kid falling in love with baseball.”
