HAMPDEN-SYDNEY – Hampden-Sydney College had a scare over the weekend as a threatening email led to an active shooter alert being issued. Following several alerts at H-SC as well as other places in Virginia, the administration later learned that this was a hoax.

The first alert warning was posted on the college website at 11:39 a.m. stating, “Active Shooter Threat 2021-01-23 11:39:05.”

The announcement said that there was the threat of an active shooter wearing camo pants, black trench coat and a white mask. The alert advised everyone to “Seek shelter until further notice.”

An update around 12:30 p.m. said that there was no current shooter but that everyone should “remain in shelter until all clear is given.”

Finally, around 1:30 an “All Clear” notice was sent out. The college administration later sent out an email that indicated that a threatening email had caused the alert. The email stated that an individual planned to come to the campus and harm people. This email went out to several institutions around the state including Averett University, Bluefield College and Central Virginia Community College.
