CHARLOTTE COUNTY – At the close of the current General Assembly in March, Charlotte County residents will know if they will have the opportunity to express their feelings toward the enactment of an additional 1% sales tax. This tax would be added to the current 5.3% state sales tax currently being charged.

Delegate James Edmunds (R-Halifax) has introduced House Bill 1631 to the House of Delegates. If passed, the tax would apply to all purchases in the county, excluding groceries and medications. According to Dan Witt, Charlotte County Administrator, the new sales tax would generate approximately $700,000 per year in income for the county. County residents would not bear the entire burden of the tax, visitors and travelers would pay this additional tax as well. These funds would then be deposited in the Capital Improvement Projects account, which provides for schools capital needs.

The same sales tax bill has been submitted for Mecklenburg, as well as several other counties in the state. Halifax County is already authorized to charge the 1% additional tax.

If the bill is approved the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors will vote on the issue. If it is approved by that group, the tax issue will appear on the ballot in November at which time the public will have the opportunity to vote for or against its passage in Charlotte County.
