Pictured, firefighters from Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department responded on Friday, November 9 to an address in the 600 block of Farmville Lake Road.

Area firefighters have been busy this week, responding to more than a dozen calls for brush fires or field fires in the last week.

Earlier that morning, the homeowner had smelled smoke outside his home, but had dismissed it as a neighbor’s chimney. As the homeowner and his son prepared to leave later in the afternoon, they found that the woods beside their home were ablaze and spreading quickly towards their home.

Firefighters responded to the area and were able to contain the fire before it spread to the home. Less than an acre was burned.

Other fires were reported on Ontario Road in Keysville, Union Cemetery Road in Charlotte Court House, and on Abilene Road in Charlotte Court House. All were contained in short order and no structures were damaged.
