signingFebruary 1 was National Signing Day for high school students recruited to play NCAA sports at the collegiate level. Bradford Webb, a senior at Randolph-Henry High School, signed his letter of commitment to attend and play baseball at Hampden-Sydney College.

Athletic Director Chris Holt, spoke about the history of Hampden-Sydney, referring to the school motto “Forming good men and good citizens since 1776” and how Bradford exemplifies that statement. He has earned a cumulative 4.19 GPA at RH and has an excellent work ethic in all areas that is evident especially in his commitment to baseball conditioning in the fall and winter months. He categorized Bradford as a versatile all-around player and pitcher. Hampden-Sydney is in its 41st year in the ODAC, the second largest Division III conference in the nation.

Head varsity coach J.R. Allen said, “We’re looking for big things on the mound from Bradford this year. He will be close enough to home next year for us to attend lots of Hampden-Sydney home games.

Pitching coach Josh Barmoy, spoke of three ways Bradford excels-in his love of the game, his attitude and the amount of effort he puts in. He also commended him on the way he has stepped up in a leadership role in the newly-formed Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the high school.

Bradford’s father, Mark Webb, remembered how Bradford began playing Dixie Youth ball at the age of three, playing each year as long as he was eligible. Mark remembered all the Dixie Youth stalwarts of Charlotte County-Bryan Tuck, Creighton Reipe, Gary Walker, Lealon Vassar, Mike Adams and others, the Randolph-Henry coaches J.R. Allen, Eddie Pyle and Josh Barmoy as well as thanking Bradford’s teachers, classmates, team members and friends who have helped him along the way.

Bradford thanked his parents, family and coaches for all their support and love over the years. He challenged the members of this year’s varsity team, “Our team-mate, Carter(White) would have given 100% this season. In his memory, I urge each of you to give everything you’ve got this year.”

The RH Statesmen are expecting great things from this team as the squad makes another run at a state championship this spring.
