CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE – The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors held its organizational meeting on Jan 3, 2018.

A motion was made by new supervisor Kay Morgan Pierantoni and seconded by new supervisor Donna Fore to elect Garland Hamlett as Chairman. In a substitute motion by Mrs. Carwile, seconded by Mr. Freeman, Gary Walker was nominated for chairman.  In that vote Walker won in a 4/3 vote with Pierantoni, Fore and Hamlett voting against.

Roberts Rules of Order for Small Groups was adopted with the addition of a second being required for all motions.

The next order of business was to determine the time for the Board’s meetings.  Pierantoni spoke in favor of meetings at 7:00 on the second Tuesday of the month as did Fore.  That motion did not pass.

In the discussion Pierantoni stated she presented a petition to the Board in July of 2016 with 819 signatures supporting changing the meeting times.  Following the meeting Pierantoni was again requested to release the petition which she has refused to allow Board members or the press to see. Pierrontoni again refused to allow the Messenger to see the petition claiming fear of retribution. She did offer to allow a panel of three ministers to verify the names on it.

According to the tape of the July 2016 meeting Pierantoni discussed the petition and Ludie Collie stated the petition contained “almost 800 signatures of Charlotte citizens and taxpayers.”

The original motion to continue meetings at 1:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month passed on a 4/3 vote with Walker, Shook, Carwile and Freeman voting in favor and Pierantoni , Fore and Hamlett voting no.

The organizational meeting was adjourned. The regular meeting will be held on January 9, 2018 at 1:30 p.m
