VICTORIA – Victoria officials will be holding a public hearing next week on the upcoming yearly budget for the town. The budget was recently released by Victoria and includes some utility rate proposed changes.

Town officials released information last week on the budget and recent utility work stating, “Town officials are continually looking at grant opportunities but unfortunately those opportunities are becoming fewer and fewer with more of them becoming loans rather than grants. An example is the raw water line project from Nottoway Falls to the water filtration plant. This project allowed for the construction of a new raw water line from Nottoway Falls and a complete rebuild of the pump station at Nottoway Falls.

This was a $2.8 million dollar project with funding provided through the USDA. The funding provided came in the form of a grant and a loan. $900,000.00 of the project was a grant. The remaining $1,900,000.00 was provided as a low interest loan with a payback of 40 years. This loan matures in 2053.

Town officials do not feel that it is in the best interest of the town to take on any more indebtedness unless it becomes mandatory. With that being said, it is the goal of town officials to continue with reconstruction and upgrades using town forces as much as possible. This will hopefully provide the most work for the money. To accomplish this goal the town council is recommending a small increase in the water and sewer rates for the 2019 fiscal year. The proposed increase of $2.00 on the water bill and $3.00 on the sewer bill will be used to help fund the operations of both systems and continue the

upgrades of the infrastructure. The Town of Victoria appreciates the cooperation and patience of the town’s citizens in dealing with the water and sewer issues. Please contact the town office with any questions that you may have in regards to the water and sanitary sewer system.

The public hearing is set to take place on Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Victoria Town Hall.
