Victoria Man Arrested After Thanksgiving Day Stabbing

VICTORIA – An incident on Thanksgiving afternoon resulted in a man being arrested on malicious wounding charges following an altercation at a get-together in Victoria.

GARLAND, GREGORYVictoria Police Officer Daniel Medlin and Victoria Police Chief Keith Phillips responded to a call from the 700 block of Court Street in town at approximately 1:30 p.m.

After arriving at the scene, an unidentified 49-year-old male victim was found to have a cut in the torso area and a stab wound to the leg following an altercation with another man identified as 58-year-old Gregory Allen Garland of Victoria.

The Victoria Police Department officials were joined at the location by members of the Virginia State Police, Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office and a Virginia Conservation Officer.

The two men reportedly got into an argument and began a physical confrontation at a Thanksgiving Day gathering. According to Chief Phillips, Garland cut and stabbed the victim during the initial fight. He then left the scene and returned with a baseball bat in order to attack the victim once again, prior to police officers arriving at the scene and arresting Garland.

Chief Phillips stated, “As bad as this incident was, it could have been even worse with the weapons involved.”

Following an initial investigation, both men involved in the altercation were transported from the scene by Victoria Fire and Rescue and Kenbridge Emergency Squad responders for further evaluation.

Garland was arrested and charged with Class 2 felony aggravated malicious wounding and Class 5 felony attempted malicious wounding. He was later transported to Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville.
