LUNENBURG – Convenience sites in Lunenburg continue to be a major topic of discussion at county meetings. The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors has continued their moves to cut down on the number of trash site locations in the county, while building new convenience sites that are enclosed, well kept and manned for many hours each week.

One of the newest proposed sites is at the intersection of Unity Road and Oral Oaks Road. County officials have looked at strategic places to house the sites so that each area in Lunenburg will have a place within relative proximity for residents to dump their trash.

This newest location has drawn some opposition. Patricia Harper-Tunley, who lives in the Unity Road area of Lunenburg recently spoke to the Board of Supervisors in order to “present concerns from my community.”

Ms. Harper-Tunley said that she was at the meeting as a spokesperson for some of the residents in the area of the proposed convenience site, but did say that there are some people that are open to the location.

She opened by stating, “We the community of Unity Road and the surrounding area stand in unison in proposing the impending trash site suggested at the intersection of Oral Oaks Road and Unity Road.”

The concerns voiced by Ms. Harper-Tunley included such factors as the proximity to homes in the area, overall appearance of the location, odor, additional traffic and possibly having animals attracted to the location.

She then stated, “We strongly urge the board and planning commission to seek an alternative location for the proposed trash containment site.”

She also questioned the process for selecting sites, including  when will the community be notified, funding for the construction, beautification plans, water runoff and testing as well as rodent control and noise issues.

According to county officials the location is still just a proposed location and has not gotten to the point of presenting a proposal for the site. In the past, committee members have noted that many factors come into play when finding a location, and additionally, finding locations at all is not a simple and easy task.

Ms. Harper-Tunley asked for the county officials to consider the questions and concerns brought up and to return some answers to those questions for the people in that area at a later date.
