Town of Farmville Approves Additional $5 Million in Funding

A public hearing was held last week during The Farmville Town Council Meeting for the purpose of hearing comments concerning the council’s proposed adoption of a $5000 budget amendment.

No one spoke during the hearing and members unanimously voted to approve the funds.

The current budget is $18, 523,475. With the additional $5,600 the town operating budget now comes to $23,529,599.

According to Town Manager Gerald Spates, this amendment was needed in order to utilize grant funds that were awarded or pending in 2014-2015 and not carried over to the current year’s budget.

New Town Attorney
Being Sought

Also during their meeting Vice Mayor Chuckie Reid noted that the town is now advertising for a new town attorney. Current town attorney, Andrea Erard who is based in Richmond recently resigned stating that the distance has because difficult for daily tasked that town needs.

The town hopes to begin the interview process sometime in December with the new attorney starting in January.

VDOT Grant Wanted for
Street Improvements

The Farmville Town Council has voted to participate in the Virginia Department of Transportation Revenue Sharing Program for the upcoming year and will seek a grant in the amount of $425,00 to help with street improvements.

The grant requested will fund improvements to include street milling and paving to Venable Street (.19 miles/from High St. to Main St.), Madison Street (.18 miles/both ends), Redford Street (.09 miles/on Griffin Blvd. side), Spruce Street (.13 miles), Pine Street (.10 miles), Franklin Street (.11 miles/2 sections), Wynne Drive (.13 miles), Race Street (.29 miles), Hooper Street (.08 miles), Vine Street (.06 miles) and South Main Street (.6 miles/Gross Street to Advance Auto), for a total of approximately 1.96 miles.

This grant does require a local match of funds and the town’s amount will be $425,000 bringing the total project amount to $850,000.
