LUNENBURG – Lunenburg officials have set the date of February 11, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. to hold a public hearing to consider adopting an ordinance change dealing with noise issues. The proposed changes to the ordinance include more defined terminology and enumeration of nuisance noise(s), measurement method(s), sound levels, exemptions, and enforcement.
County Attorney Frank Rennie has been working on drafting a noise ordinance since the November meeting of the Lunenburg Board of Supervisors when Victoria resident Richard Watson brought complaints of loud and vulgar music that is sometimes heard in the neighborhood where he lives.
Mr. Rennie noted that he had been working with and talking to Lunenburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement and Lunenburg Sheriff Arthur Townsend and had consulted area judges to see what changes to the noise ordinance would make it more enforceable in court.
Mr. Rennie noted that the use of decibel meters along with a defined distance was the consensus for enforcing noise violations. Mr. Rennie stated, “The meters can offer an actual physical reading that can be provided in court.”
The draft of changes to the ordinance is on file in the Lunenburg County Administration Office, the County website at www.lunenburgva.org, the Victoria Public Library, and Ripberger Public Library, during regular operational hours.
