Firefighters from Darlington Heights, Hamden-Sydney and Pamplin responded to a report of a structure fire just after a major thunderstorm blew through Prince Edward County Tuesday night.
Firefighters arrived on scene around 9:45 PM to find a two story home in the 4800 block of Darlington Heights Road fully engulfed. Reports indicated that the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters were called back twice over the next day to extinguish reignited areas.
Lightning appeared to be the cause of the blaze. A tree near the home showed signs of lightning damage and one of the roots of the tree was blown out of the ground, creating a trench that led from the damaged tree to the corner of the home.
