This and That

I trust you are making progress with your efforts at gentle parenting that we discussed last week.  Remember, “baby steps” (pun intended).  You are making a conscious effort during September to s l o w   d o w n.  Preschoolers have no concept of time, so “hurry up” and “we’re going to be late” have no meaning to them.  When we give ourselves plenty of time to get ready for school and work in the mornings, or bedtime in the evenings, we allow preschoolers, and older children as well, to do the things they need to do at their pace.

logo-wee-notesThere is a new children’s book, Calm Baby Gently by Dr. John S. Hutton at Blue Manatee Press, a health-focused, independent children’s publishing imprint.  Pediatrician and researcher, Dr. John S. Hutton, MD is a clinical research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Reading and Literacy Discovery Center.  Dr. Hutton hopes to achieve three objectives with this book:

• improved insight and coping mechanisms for prolonged crying, a normal stage of infant development,

• reduced utilization of health care services and unnecessary invasive tests for such crying, and most importantly,

• prevention of non-accidental trauma and Shaken Baby Syndrome (Traumatic Brain Injury TBI)

It is an easy-to-read book conveying a difficult topic in a soft, reassuring way.  It is written from an infant’s perspective and represents ethnic and gender diversity.  Should you be interested in obtaining a copy of the book, you may access the web site at press@bluemanateebooks.com.

Ten Things No One Told You About Being a Parent

You will never sleep as soundly again.

Most of your meals will be eaten cold.

You will feel more emotions in a 24-hour period than you ever thought possible.

You will enjoy buying things for your kids more than buying things for yourself.

You will likely do something you swore you’d never do (I’ll never let my child wear an outfit she picked out).  Some battles just aren’t worth the fight!

The years will fly by quicker than you think.

You’ll look forward to bedtime all day, but once they’re asleep, you’ll miss them.

You will become a much more confident person.

You’ll be more tired, but you’ll stay up even later.

Your heart will never know a love quite like this.

Grandma Exercise:

Kiss and Squeeze, Kiss and Squeeze,  Kiss and Squeeze.  It doesn’t do a thing for your weight, but oh – what it does for your heart!  Happy Grandparent’s Week!
