The Prom of Their Dreams

Prom is the highlight of almost every high school girl’s career. They spend countless hours finding the perfect dress, the perfect hairstyle and the perfect date. For Randolph-Henry High School senior Whitney Dunn, it was no different.

Whitney Dunn PromWhitney’s story is unique because she is diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. CDC estimates that an average of 1 in 323 children in the U.S. have CP.” Her date, Watt Fulp, has a form of autism which is categorized as “a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.”

According to Whitney’s mom, Nancy Dunn, the couple met back in October when Whitney’s class at Randolph-Henry was invited to a Halloween party at the Apex Day Support Center that Watt attends. “I got with Mrs. Wendelin and she asked Watt’s mom,” said Dunn.

On the day of the prom, Whitney and Watt met at the Apex Day Support Center to take pictures and had a very special ride to the prom. A horse and carriage from “Draft Horse Adventures” picked the couple up and transported them from the Apex building to Randolph-Henry. “That was his mom’s idea [Melinda Strickland],” said Dunn.

Watt had never been to a prom before, but he and his date danced the night away. “They both enjoyed it and had a great time,” commented Dunn. It seems it didn’t end there, because Dunn excitedly posted on Facebook “so it seems my baby girl has gotten her a boyfriend. Her and Watt Fulp have became boyfriend/girlfriend it is so adorable. Us parents are making plans to take them somewhere again.”
