Village A&CCHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE – It was in the wee hours of the morning in August 2007 when the fire alarm began its mournful wail, signaling a disaster unfolding in town. The Arts and Crafts Store had been set ablaze.

In the coming weeks, the artisans and crafters who had faith in the viability of the business demonstrated their determination that this enterprise was not going up in flames. They re-organized and held a fundraiser in the town fire house the following November and by May 2008 had rented a new space for Village Arts and Crafts.

At present, there are 29 members of the organization, most of whom are creators of the handmade merchandise in the store. From pottery to aprons, the store is chock full of local crafts, and sitting prominently on a top shelf is the symbol of hope that has become the store’s heart: three framed crocheted crosses that survived the fire in 2007.

This Saturday, May 12, there’s going to be a big Customer Appreciation Day, paired with a tenth anniversary party at the craft store. Beginning at 10 a.m. there will be door prizes, giveaways, and delicious goodies for everyone who attends. Manager Susie Hopkins invites everyone to come celebrate their success. She adds, “We’re looking for new talent in the store. There’s always room for one more.”

Celebrate the success of this thriving little business in Charlotte Court House.
