Last week’s Taste of Farmville event raised over $8,000. The 12th annual event sponsored by the Farmville Rotary Club is used to raise funds that go directly back into the local organization.

We also do service projects with collected money, such as we bought 300 books – “When I Grow Up” – by Al Yankovic, which we read and distributed in elementary schools in Cumberland and Prince Edward,” said Farmville Rotary Public Relations Chair Sue Carter.

This year’s event featured 30 vendors including restaurants such as The Fishin’ Pig, Boxcar Bistro, Charley’s, Badeaux’s, Granny B.’s, and Bojangles; businesses such as Maria’s Sweet Creations, Fourth Street Motor Company, and Centra; and organizations such as the Ruritan Club, United Way, and 4-H.

According to Carter, approximately 450 people attended the event.

The primary objective of the Rotary is service – in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence.
